Want to try mushroom coffee? Here’s what you need to know

As moms, we’re expert multitaskers, so it makes sense to want the things you use, foods you eat, and drinks you drink to do some multitasking for you. A cup of yogurt counts as breakfast and a probiotic boost for the day, your moisturizer is loaded with SPF, taking at least one step out of your morning skincare routine and your nighttime sleepy girl mocktail helps you unwind and get a good night’s sleep.  What happens when you mix coffee with powerful mushroom extract? A morning drink that will wake you up, support your immune system, and help you focus all morning long.

Mushroom coffee has taken the home brewing wellness community by storm over the past several years. Whether you prefer instant, drip, French press, or coffee pods, there’s a mushroom coffee for you!

What is mushroom coffee?

Mushroom coffee is essentially coffee, either ground beans or instant, that has been infused with mushroom extract. And I’m not talking about your typical shiitake or white button mushrooms.

Adaptogenic mushrooms like lion’s mane, reishi, chaga, cordyceps and turkey tail have medicinal properties that support immune health, cognitive function and stress. If you’re thinking, “yuck, mushroom-tasting coffee!” you don’t have to worry. Most mushroom coffees taste just like your regular coffee or have flavors added like mocha or vanilla to dress them up into a delicious brew.

Is mushroom coffee good for you?

Mushroom coffee often has less caffeine than regular coffee, sometimes with half as much cup-for-cup since dehydrated and the ground mushroom extract is added to the coffee beans. You’ll get the same antioxidant boost you get from your regular coffee beans in addition to the bioactive compounds found in mushrooms that can have various positive effects on the body. In addition to mushrooms, some of the coffee we’ve added below has additional benefits like vitamins, other adaptogens, or plant compounds like L-theanine added for an even stronger nutrient boost.

Mushroom coffee benefits

Starting your day with mushroom coffee adds a little boost of adaptogens, antioxidants, and other plant compounds while you get your caffeine fix.  Some of the potential benefits of drinking mushroom coffee include:

Improved stress response: My favorite benefit of mushroom coffee is its ability to improve how your body responds to stress. Mushrooms like cordyceps, lion’s mane, and reishi have adaptogens that help the body better adapt to and handle stress, with beneficial effects against chronic inflammation, neurodegenerative diseases and metabolic disorders.

Immune support: Mushrooms, including cordyceps, turkey tail, maitake and reishi, have the ability to stimulate cytokine production, which then signals your immune system to take action, fight off bacteria and viruses and keep you healthy.

Cognitive health: Research has found that mushrooms, including lion’s mane and reishi, have the potential to support cognitive health and improve depression and anxiety symptoms and focus.

Most adaptogens take anywhere from one to four weeks to begin working to a point where any differences can be noticed. I’m not sure about you, but adding something new to my routine and remembering to keep it up is no easy feat. Drinking coffee that has mushrooms added to it makes it easy to add something to my wellness routine since I’m drinking coffee every morning, anyhow!
