Dornoch shocks Belmont Stakes field with win at 17-1 odds

A shocking upset unfolded in the 156th running of the Belmont Stakes as Dornoch, a horse with 17-1 odds to win entering the race, took the top spot in Saratoga on Saturday. The official time was 2:01.64.

Mindframe (5-1 odds) and Kentucky Derby runner-up Sierra Leone (8-5) finished second and third, respectively.

Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and the Preakness Stakes winner Seize the Grey were also among the field of 10 horses Dornoch outran in the 1 1/4 mile race, which was 1/4 of a mile shorter than when the race was run at Belmont Park.

The 2024 Belmont Stakes win was Dornoch’s first but jockey Luis Saez’s second. Saez took first place with Essential Quality in 2021 at Belmont Park.

Former MLB player Jayson Werth, who won a World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008, is a co-owner of Dornoch and said he places this victory “right up there with winning (on) the biggest stage.”

“Horse racing is the most underrated sport in the world, bar none. It’s the biggest game, you’ve got the Derby, the Preakness, the Belmont, we just won the Belmont,” Werth said. “This is as good as it gets in horse racing, it’s as good as it gets in sports.”
