Antonio Rudiger to be in Real Madrid squad vs Atletico Madrid despite thigh injury

Antonio Rudiger will be in the squad for Real Madrid against rivals Atletico Madrid despite fears over a thigh injury.

The 30-year-old was substituted at half-time during Thursday’s 2-0 La Liga victory over Getafe.

He has since been assessed and will be part of the group for Sunday’s Madrid derby.

“Rudiger has improved a lot,” manager Carlo Ancelotti said on Saturday. “We expect the same improvement between today and tomorrow.

“We will evaluate him tomorrow and make a decision. It’s a knock, it’s not so important, but we have to see him tomorrow. He will be in the squad.”

On whether the alternatives to the German international are Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy, he added: “Yes, and the third option could be (Eduardo) Camavinga. It could be because of their characteristics.

“They are the three options, and they all give me confidence and can do very well.”

The game at the Bernabeu will be a third in less than a month between the two city rivals.

Real won the first in the semi-finals of the Super Cup on January 10, before Atletico gained a measure of revenge in the Copa del Rey last 16 eight days later.

This time they meet in La Liga with Real top of the table, 10 points clear of Diego Simeone’s side who are third.

“Another important match,” Ancelotti added. “This is the third time in a short space of time that we’ve played each other, they’ve been evenly matched and competitive.

“I think it will be the same tomorrow. It’s good for us to be back at the Bernabeu.”
